Of course leave it up to Duff to come up with the next great idea in the baking world.  A “we bake..you create” cake studio opened by none other than the master himself Duff Goldman.  I had the opportunity to go here with my sister one day while visiting LA.  It is located in West Hollywood and from my experience pretty easy to get into.  While they do take reservations for parties, we were just a party of 2 and were able to walk in with only a 15 minute wait.

While I believe there are a bit too many choices, it really is a well thought out operation.  Questions like “cake or cupcakes” “chocolate or vanilla” are followed with “buttercream or fondant”, “filling” “cream cheese”.  And it goes on.

How it works:

You pick your pallate: cake or cupcakes (max. 2 people per cake)

You pick your flavors: cake, filling & icing

You pick you icing medium: fondant or buttermilk

Then you get to play!  They deliver your pre-made cake within minutes along with a ball of fondant  and/or your buttermilk icing.  You then get to pick from a large variety of colors to dye your icing and start applying it to the cake.   After the initial icing application is over you are left alone to create using your fondant, cookie cutters, 2 colors of icing in bags (you choose the colors), 2 choices of candy toppings, with extras to purchase if you like (airbrushing, edible glitter, more icing colors, etc).

This was a really fun Sunday afternoon time consumer for my sister and I who have a small interest in baking.  I would recommend going in with some sort of idea or inspiration as we went in just wanting to have a good time and did not have the best of creations in the end.  They do try and rush you a bit by giving you a two hour time frame, so make sure you have an idea going into it and you’ll be sure to have plenty of time to finish your creation.

We started with my favorite color pink and followed up with fun gold glitter and ended up with this birthday cake for our Aunt Chaille.  I would give it a 5 on a 1-10 scale because the girl next to us had an amazing winter wonderland she was creating that blew us out of the water.  We also had a 7 year old from the neighboring party picking our accent colors…so purple and orange they were.  It was fun!  Go by and try it next time you are looking for something to do.  Also, they sell gift cards which make great gifts for the kids in your life.

For those of you who don’t know who Thomas Keller is…go to Vegas and eat at Bouchon.  You will definitely want to know him after that!  If you have more of a ritzy taste, hit up his ever so famous French Laundry, or for the more affordable diner Ad Hoc, in Napa, California.  There is also a Bouchon Bakery in NYC that sells their delicious baked goods (including their famous macaroons).  While I have never been to either of his restaurants in Napa, I have dined at Bouchon in Vegas and LA.  I have to say Vegas is much better!  There brunch is amazing.

What?  We’re in a recession you say and you can’t make it to Vegas, NYC, LA or Napa?  Ok fine.  He has a few cook books if you are feeling adventurous, but you can also easily whip up some of his fabulous creations by just visiting Williams Sonoma.  If you go on a good day they will even have taste testers*.

*Please note, if you go to the highland village location skip the sprinkles….Baked Sugar has better cupcakes 🙂

I made it home safe and sound yesterday, with a sparkle in my eye and my sweet tooth bigger than ever!  I have big plans for this week to get everything up and going from my home base.  I will keep yall posted.

Thanks Kate and Topher for a great night on Saturday.  Hunt, Texas was the perfect resting place and watering hole (to say the least) from the long drive home.  And how much better was it that all my friends were in one place!?  Criders is a blast and I can’t wait till our return, but I am sure they are not holding their breath.

On the agenda this week for Baked Sugar…

1. Talk to the Small Business Administration (free advice is always nice)

2. Set up a bank account (money, money, money)

3. Organize the kitchen

4. Supplies

5. Secret recipe finalizations (taste testers needed)

Happy Monday everyone!

If you have not seen Cupcake Wars yet you are really missing out.  It is Food Network’s best show in my opinion and I would love to be on it.  The Food Network describes it as “Cupcake Wars pits Cupcake vs. Cupcake in Food Network’s tastiest competition yet.  Based off of taste and presentation, only one will win the gig. We are about to put on our helmet, pick up our frosting gun and go to battle. The war is on!”
